Garissa County and the wider North Eastern region are mourning the passing of respected elder and community leader Mzee Dubat Ali Amey, who died on Saturday after a long illness.

Mzee Dubat was widely recognized as a strong voice for pastoralist communities, having championed the interests of livestock keepers and farmers across Northern Kenya.

He served as Chairman of the Kenya Livestock Marketing Council and the National Farmers Federation, where he pushed for improved livestock markets and farmer support systems.

He also contributed to Kenya’s constitutional review process and remained a consistent advocate for human rights, justice, and community cohesion.

Known for his principled leadership, he played a key role in promoting peace, security, and development in the North Eastern region.

Tributes poured in from leaders across Garissa County, who described him as a unifying figure and a pillar of wisdom whose legacy will endure for generations.

Abdi Ali Abdi, the Member of Parliament for Ijara, led the condolences, describing the late elder as a symbol of unity and selfless service:

“We have lost a great community elder and a voice of reason who contributed immensely to unity, cohesion, and development. His humility and dedication to serving others will always be remembered.”
