The Somali National Army (SNA) on Sunday marked its 66th anniversary with a large-scale military parade in Mogadishu, showcasing its growing strength and renewed role in securing the country after decades of conflict.

The commemoration, held at the Ministry of Defense, drew senior government officials, top military leadership, and members of the public in a symbolic show of unity and national pride.

Military jets were seen hovering over the skies of Mogadishu as part of the celebrations, marking the occasion with an aerial display that underscored the army’s evolving capabilities.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud attended the ceremony and led tributes to the armed forces, praising their sacrifices and ongoing transformation.

“This day is not only about history, but about the future of our nation,” President Mohamud said in his address. “The Somali National Army has risen from difficult times and is now a force that represents hope, resilience, and the determination of our people to secure lasting peace.”

The event featured an extensive military parade, with various units and divisions of the SNA marching in formation, demonstrating discipline, coordination, and operational readiness.

Military hardware, including modern armored vehicles and advanced weaponry, was displayed, while the presence of combat aircraft further highlighted the expanding capabilities of Somalia’s defense forces.

The Minister of Defense Ahmed Maalim Fiqi, speaking at the ceremony, emphasized the progress made in rebuilding the army.

“We are witnessing a new chapter for the Somali National Army,” he said. “Through sustained training, international cooperation, and national commitment, we are building a professional force capable of defending our sovereignty and protecting our citizens.”

Military commanders also highlighted the army’s operational achievements in recent years, particularly its role in reclaiming territories from extremist groups.

The SNA, often working alongside local forces and international partners, has intensified operations aimed at weakening militant networks that have long destabilized parts of the country.

The Chief of the Somali National Army Ibrahim Mohamed Mohamud noted that these gains reflect both improved strategy and growing confidence among troops.

“Our soldiers have demonstrated courage and commitment on the frontlines,” he said. “We are not only liberating land—we are restoring dignity to communities that suffered for years under oppression.”

Observers say the anniversary comes at a critical time, as Somalia continues efforts to strengthen its security institutions and transition toward greater self-reliance in defense.

The display of military capacity is also seen as a message to both domestic and international audiences that Somalia is steadily rebuilding its national forces.
Founded in 1960, the Somali National Army has undergone significant challenges, including periods of collapse and reconstruction.

Today’s anniversary celebration served as both a tribute to its legacy and a reflection of its ongoing transformation into a more modern, capable force
