NAIROBI- The North Eastern Parliamentary Group (NEPG) has issued a strong condemnation of the rising violence along the Mwingi–Garissa road, warning that the deteriorating security situation threatens lives, property, and regional stability.

In a press statement delivered by Adan Keynan, Member of Parliament for Eldas and Chairman of the NEPG, the legislators expressed deep concern over what they described as “escalating tensions and violent skirmishes” along the Kitui–Garissa county boundary.

The lawmakers said the clashes have already resulted in the loss of innocent lives, injuries to civilians, and widespread destruction of property, calling the developments a serious breakdown of law and order.

“This senseless loss of life and the suffering inflicted upon families and communities are wholly unacceptable and demand immediate, firm and decisive intervention,” Keynan stated.

The group extended condolences to bereaved families and pledged solidarity with affected communities, while unequivocally condemning acts of violence, particularly those driven by ethnic hostility, incitement, and lawlessness.

According to the statement, such actions undermine the foundations of peaceful coexistence that communities in the region have worked to build over time.

The MPs emphasized that violence cannot be justified as a means of resolving disputes under any circumstances.

The NEPG urged residents in the affected areas to exercise restraint, avoid retaliatory attacks, and embrace dialogue and lawful conflict resolution mechanisms. They stressed that maintaining peace and unity is a shared responsibility.

At the same time, the legislators called on security agencies to act swiftly and impartially to restore order. They demanded immediate investigations and the arrest and prosecution of all individuals involved in instigating or carrying out the violence.

“The enforcement of accountability is essential not only to deter further violence but also to restore public confidence in state institutions,” the statement noted.

The group warned that the ongoing instability poses a significant threat to development and prosperity in the region, describing the situation as untenable and requiring urgent, coordinated action.

In a bid to de-escalate tensions, the NEPG also announced plans to engage leaders from neighbouring counties, including Kitui and Garissa, to promote dialogue, strengthen inter-community relations, and advance long-term peacebuilding efforts.

The statement underscored that collaborative leadership and unity of purpose will be critical in restoring calm and ensuring sustainable coexistence in the region
