Kenya is seeking to strengthen its economic ties with China through expanded trade, increased investment, technology transfer and local manufacturing, with the aim of creating jobs and improving livelihoods.

Speaking at the 2026 Legislators Forum for Friendly Exchanges in China, the Speaker of the National Assembly, Rt. Hon. (Dr.) Moses M. Wetang’ula, underscored the need to build on the longstanding bilateral relationship to accelerate industrialisation, expand economic opportunities and advance shared development priorities.

Major infrastructure projects, including the Standard Gauge Railway, Nairobi Expressway and Lamu Port, demonstrate the impact of Kenya–China cooperation and the opportunities available through strategic partnerships.

However, the significant trade imbalance between the two countries remains a key concern. In 2025, Kenya imported goods worth approximately US$5.19 billion from China, compared with exports valued at about US$130.8 million.

Bridging this gap will require stronger local manufacturing, value addition in agricultural production and improved access for Kenyan goods to the Chinese market.

Cooperation in technology, agriculture, clean energy and skills development also presents opportunities to stimulate economic growth and expand employment, particularly for young people.

Under Kenya–China cooperation initiatives, 144 technical and vocational training institutions have received modern equipment, while 314 trainers have been trained.

Parliamentarians have an important role in promoting policies and partnerships that translate bilateral relations into practical benefits for citizens.

Strengthening these ties will be essential to building a more balanced trading relationship, enhancing local production and ensuring that economic cooperation delivers inclusive growth and lasting prosperity for Kenyans.
