NAIROBI- Outgoing National Security Advisor Amb. Monica Juma has called on newly posted Foreign serveice officers to remain vigilant and committed to safeguarding Kenya’s national interests as they take up assignments abroad.

Amb. Juma made the remarks during the opening session of a three-week pre-departure training programme at the Foreign Service Academy (FSA) for newly posted officers from the Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs and other government agencies preparing for diplomatic assignments abroad.

During her address, she delivered a lecture on the “Trinity of Statecraft”—the interconnected relationship between national security, national interest and foreign policy—stressing that diplomats must clearly understand how the three work together in advancing a country’s strategic objectives.

She noted that a country’s national interests are best protected when the region remains stable and secure, highlighting the critical role diplomacy plays in supporting peace and cooperation within the region.

Amb. Juma further observed that Kenya’s aspirations and development agenda face both internal and external threats, calling on the diplomats to remain vigilant and proactive in protecting the country’s interests wherever they are deployed.

“There is no greater honour than serving your country abroad,” she said, reminding the officers that diplomatic service is both a privilege and a responsibility. She urged them to serve with integrity, professionalism and dedication, noting that their conduct and commitment will play a crucial role in safeguarding Kenya’s interests and strengthening the country’s reputation on the global stage.

Also speaking during the opening session, Acting Director-General of the Foreign Service Academy Amb. Patrick Wamoto, EBS, urged the officers to demonstrate patience, resilience, accountability and cultural intelligence in their postings.

He noted that diplomacy has become increasingly complex due to emerging global issues, the presence of new actors in international relations and evolving diplomatic methods, which require diplomats to remain adaptable and versatile.

“A diplomat is both a negotiator and a bridge-builder. Learn the language, master the culture, and use every opportunity to tell Kenya’s story,” he said.

Amb. Wamoto also underscored the government’s focus on economic diplomacy, urging the officers to transform Kenya’s missions abroad into vibrant economic hubs capable of attracting investment, expanding trade opportunities and creating economic prospects for Kenyans.

He further highlighted the growing importance of digital diplomacy, encouraging the officers to sharpen their communication and social media skills to effectively counter misinformation and engage global audiences.

The training programme is designed to equip the officers with the knowledge, skills and strategic awareness required to effectively promote and safeguard Kenya’s interests on the international stage.
