SIMAD University on Monday marked World Design Day 2026 with a forum highlighting the role of emerging technologies in shaping the future of digital design, bringing together students, industry practitioners and creative entrepreneurs.

The event, themed “Designing Without Limits in UI/UX and 3D Creation,” was organised by the university’s Creative Studio and focused on how innovation is transforming user experience design and digital production across industries, from education to business and media.

Opening the session, Director of Public Relations Ayub Jenyo said the university is committed to nurturing talent capable of competing in a rapidly evolving global digital economy.

“Design is no longer just about aesthetics; it is about solving real-world problems and creating meaningful experiences,” Jenyo said. “At SIMAD, we are investing in platforms that empower young creatives to think beyond boundaries and respond to global challenges through innovation.”

The forum featured presentations and interactive discussions led by guest speakers Alijabir Abdulkadir and Mohamed Abdikhabir, who shared insights drawn from industry practice, including the integration of artificial intelligence, immersive 3D tools and user-centered design principles.

“UI/UX is evolving faster than ever, and designers must continuously adapt to new tools and user expectations,” Abdulkadir said.

“What we are seeing now is a shift toward more inclusive, accessible and intelligent design systems.”
Abdikhabir emphasised the importance of practical skills and experimentation in building competitive portfolios.

“The future belongs to designers who are willing to test ideas, fail quickly and learn faster. Platforms like this give young creatives the confidence to explore and innovate,” he said.

Organisers said the event also served as a networking platform, allowing participants to connect with mentors and peers while exploring collaborative opportunities in Somalia’s growing digital and creative sectors.

The celebration was supported by Amka Stock and SIMAD Innovation Lab, which sponsored prizes aimed at encouraging creativity and hands-on learning among participants.

According to organisers, such initiatives are part of broader efforts to position Somalia as an emerging hub for digital innovation in the Horn of Africa, as universities and private sector players invest in skills development and technology-driven education.

“Events like World Design Day are critical in bridging the gap between academia and industry,” a representative from the SIMAD Creative Studio said.

“They inspire a new generation of designers to create solutions that are not only visually compelling but also socially impactful.”

World Design Day is celebrated globally each year to recognise the value of design in improving lives and advancing sustainable development, with institutions worldwide hosting activities to promote creativity and innovation.
