The Somali government has expressed deep regret over the United States’ decision to deny entry to internationally renowned referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan, describing him as a national icon whose achievements have brought pride and recognition to Somalia on the global stage.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said the Federal Government had undertaken diplomatic efforts with relevant authorities in support of Artan’s travel but was unable to secure a favorable outcome.

“The Federal Government of Somalia undertook diplomatic efforts with the relevant authorities in support of Mr. Artan’s travel. Regrettably, these efforts did not result in a favorable outcome,” the ministry said.

Artan had been expected to become the first Somali referee to officiate at a FIFA World Cup after being selected among FIFA’s final list of match officials for the tournament.

His inclusion was widely celebrated as a historic milestone for Somali football and a testament to the country’s growing presence in international sports.

The travel setback comes amid restrictions affecting citizens of several countries, including Somalia, under US immigration and travel policies.

Somali authorities have indicated they will continue engaging relevant partners to seek further clarification regarding the matter.

Upon his arrival in Mogadishu on Wednesday, Artan received a hero’s welcome from supporters, sports officials and members of the public.

Thousands of Somalis thronged the highway leading to Aden Adde International Airport, waving national flags and chanting his name as they gathered to welcome the internationally accredited referee back home.

Speaking shortly after his arrival, Artan thanked those who stood by him during the ordeal while expressing disappointment over the events that prevented him from participating in the tournament.

“What happened has happened and it was unfortunate. I am grateful for the support Fifa gave me,” Artan said.

Artan, who was named CAF Referee of the Year in 2025, is widely regarded as one of Africa’s leading football officials.

Over the years, he has officiated major continental and international fixtures, earning praise for his professionalism, consistency and commitment to the game.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs described him as “Somalia’s most accomplished sporting figure” and said his success serves as an inspiration to young Somalis across the country.

“His success continues to inspire Somali youth and demonstrates that talent, commitment, and perseverance can lead to international excellence,” the ministry said.

The government confirmed that Artan had safely returned home and would continue carrying out his national and international responsibilities.

“Mr. Artan has safely returned home and will continue to carry out his national and international responsibilities with the same dedication and professionalism that have defined his career,” the statement added.

The ministry also thanked countries, institutions, sporting organizations and individuals who expressed solidarity with Somalia and Artan following the decision.

The Somali government said it would continue pursuing clarification over the circumstances surrounding the travel denial while safeguarding the dignity and rights of Somali citizens abroad.

“Welcome home, Mr. Omar Abdulkadir Artan. The Somali people stand proudly with you and celebrate your remarkable achievements,” the ministry said.
