NAIROBI– Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale on Tuesday today led a strategic meeting at the Afya Annex in Nairobi with the Chairpersons and Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of institutions under the Ministry of Health.

The key agenda was to discuss the institutions’ mandates in advancing Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and their role in Kenya’s transformative health agenda.

Accompanied by the Director-General for Health, Dr. Patrick Amoth, and the Principal Secretary for Public Health & Professional Standards, Mary Muthoni, the CS emphasized the pivotal role strong leadership plays in the success of the health sector.

CS Duale pointed out that Semi-Autonomous Government Agencies (SAGAs) have a crucial part to play in enhancing healthcare delivery, urging them to take ownership of their roles to improve decision-making processes and inter-agency coordination.

“Effective leadership and governance are the backbone of the health sector’s transformation. It is essential that we work together in a unified approach to ensure that healthcare delivery is efficient and accessible to all Kenyans, especially at the grassroots level,” CS Duale remarked during the meeting.

The CS reiterated the government’s commitment to expanding access to affordable, quality healthcare through initiatives such as Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and the Social Health Authority (SHA).

He stressed that the SHA, a vital component in the ongoing reforms, would be instrumental in providing equitable healthcare services across the country.

“Healthcare remains at the center of the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), and we are fully committed to ensuring that every Kenyan has access to the care they need. We must prioritize national interests and support the rollout of the SHA for sustainable and inclusive healthcare,” Hon. Duale added.

In his address, Hon. Duale underscored the importance of efficiency, accountability, and integrity in the management of health resources. He urged the team to adhere strictly to the legal frameworks governing healthcare policies, emphasizing that upholding these principles is vital for improving service delivery and maintaining public trust.

The CS also called for teamwork and professionalism, noting that prudent resource use and collaboration across all institutions would be key to achieving the government’s ambitious healthcare goals.

“Our success depends on our ability to work together effectively and use our resources wisely to ensure that we deliver quality healthcare to all Kenyans,” Hon. Duale stated.

As the meeting concluded, Hon. Duale expressed confidence in the ability of the health institutions to work together to meet the challenges and opportunities ahead, ensuring that the transformative health agenda reaches its full potential.
