ELDORET- Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale today presided over the groundbreaking of the new 4,000-bed Multi-Specialty Facility at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Kiplombe, Uasin Gishu County, officially launching Phase I, which will deliver the first 2,000 beds of this long-awaited project.
Scheduled for completion in April 2027, the fully funded Government of Kenya investment will include 60 ICU beds and 120 HDU beds, marking a transformative step in expanding specialised, accessible, and affordable healthcare as the country advances decisively toward Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
The project spans a 200-acre site, with initial phases financed by the Government and delivered through a joint initiative of the Ministries of Defence and Health.
Once complete, the facility will ease the burden on the current MTRH, elevate Eldoret into a premier medical and research hub in East Africa, and strengthen ongoing national reforms aimed at widening access to quality care.
Hon. Duale emphasised that the facility embodies the future of healthcare—anchored in digital transformation, artificial intelligence, and innovation. It will feature interoperable electronic medical records, a unified patient ID, telemedicine capabilities, and real-time eLMIS for commodity tracking, fully aligned with the Digital Health Transformation Agenda (2023–2030).
This state-of-the-art investment marks a significant milestone for the health sector. Beyond strengthening MTRH’s contribution to UHC, the KSh 50 billion project is expected to create over 10,000 jobs, serving as a powerful economic and social catalyst and reaffirming President William Ruto’s commitment to the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).
The Cabinet Secretary acknowledged the National Treasury, the Uasin Gishu County Government, development partners, academia, clinicians, community representatives, and all stakeholders whose collaboration demonstrates that building a resilient health system is a shared national responsibility.
The event was hosted by Governor Dr Jonathan Bii and MTRH CEO Dr Philip Kirwa, and attended by Principal Secretaries Dr Ouma Oluga (Medical Services) and Dr Patrick Mariru (Defence); Senate Health Committee Chair Jackson Mandago; Governors Wisley Rotich (Elgeyo Marakwet) and Stephen Sang (Nandi); Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Hon. Gladys Boss Shollei; Veska Kangogo (Advisor, Strategy Execution, Office of the President); and leaders from national and county governments.
