GARISSA– Bahja Ahmed Shale whose military father died in a shabab attack in Somalia posted an exemplary result with a grade A-(minus) in rural Saka Girls secondary school in Balambala, Garissa County.

The 18 years old who lost her mother during the covid-19 pandemic got emotional when speaking to journalists at their Garissa home narrating how she worked hard through the years to post such a starling performance.

“I first thank Allah for this success and secondly everyone who supported me in one way or another special dedication to my teachers and siblings who have been supporting me all through,” she said while wiping her tears on her cheeks.

She scored an A-(Minus) with 72 points, two points shy of getting an A(plain). She explained that she aspires to join the University of Nairobi to study medicine and become a surgeon.

Bahja who is the fifth born in a family of seven lost her military father in July 2015 while returning back to Somalia after six months break, they were ambushed by alshabab militant in an IED attack.

Their mother also died in March 2021 as a result of covid-19 complications with the eldest and only brother Daud Ahmed Shale taking the responsibility to take care of his six sisters.

“As a family, we thank Allah for her success, she has always been disciplined both at home and in school, all through her school, she has never absconded even for a day, we expected this kind of results from her,” her elder brother, Daud told the standard on phone yesterday.

He said growing up without parents has had its challenges but managed to not only support his sisters in school but also make sure they performed exceptionally well in their national examination.

“As a family we have supported her all through and continue to give her necessary support to ensure she gets a good university and her dreams of becoming a medical doctor and a surgeon is realized,” he noted.

Daud appealed for help from the Government to help the girl pursue her academic dreams adding that the family will try all their best but capacity may not be enough.

Mohamed Noor, her mathematics teacher in school confirmed that the 18-year-old was a disciplined, well behaved and hardworking student who was always at the right place at the right time.

“Sometimes, you will find her in class at 4am studying, she has maintained top position all through the years, we expected her to get an A Plain,” he said.

The Immediate Chief Principal of the school Mr Yakub Buthul who was this term posted to Haji girls secondary school referred to the girl as a genius confirming her top position all through.

The principal who stayed at the school for ten years said he had created friendly environment for learners where students can express their views and including them in decision making noting that he had also improved in nutrition of the school linking it to its better results

“After realizing that she was orphaned and bright, we enlisted her to the presidential bursary that comes through the children services,” he added.

The school has a General mean score of B- with total 105 students with 85 students managing C+ and above, the lest had C-(minus).
