Dhusamareb– Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud arrived in the Galmudug state capital, Dhusamareb, on Tuesday, where he is set to inaugurate several World Bank-funded development projects and spearhead a renewed offensive against the militant group al Shabaab.

Accompanied by federal ministers and top military commanders, the president received a warm welcome from Galmudug regional leaders, including President Ahmed Abdi Kariye, Vice President Cali Daahir Ciid, and members of the regional parliament. Traditional elders and residents also gathered to greet the federal delegation.

President Hassan’s visit comes at a critical juncture as al Shabaab regains ground in central Somalia, including parts of Galgaduud and Hiiraan that were previously liberated by Somali forces. The latest military campaign  now the third launched by President Hassan Sheikh from Dhusamareb  aims to reverse those gains and build momentum in the fight against the insurgents.

Previous offensives in 2022 and 2023 were halted after the Somali National Army (SNA) suffered significant setbacks, raising questions about coordination, resource capacity, and public mobilization. However, this new phase reportedly comes with renewed international backing, particularly from Turkey, signaling a potentially stronger and more sustained push.

During his stay in Dhusamareb, the president is expected to meet with Galmudug leaders, security officials, and community elders to bolster local support for the offensive. He will also oversee the commissioning of development projects aimed at improving infrastructure and service delivery in the region.

“This visit is about more than just military strategy,” said a federal official speaking on condition of anonymity. “The president is here to mobilize the public, uplift the morale of our troops, and deliver tangible development to communities on the frontline of this conflict.”

The renewed push against al Shabaab also comes amid growing domestic pressure. The federal government, led by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, faces scrutiny from opposition lawmakers and the public over the deteriorating security situation. Sources say a no-confidence motion is being prepared in parliament, which could threaten the political stability of the current administration.

As al Shabaab militants inch closer to Mogadishu and reclaim lost territories, President Hassan’s success in galvanizing national and regional support for this latest campaign may prove decisive not only for Somalia’s security but also for the future of his administration.
