Former National Security and Intelligence boss Fahad Yassin arrived in Mogadishu yesterday and has already began holding a meeting with some of the country’s top leaders and military commanders.
Hours-long meeting was held at Fahad Yassin’s residence which is located at the Somali Presidential Palace, where military commanders including the Somali Police Commissioner, the acting NISA Commander Farmajo and the Banadir Regional Police Commander were present.
The meeting has raised suspicions that Fahad Yassin still wielded considerable power in government institutions, particularly the security services, which still seem to be operating under his orders.
Some opposition politicians are also skeptical that Fahad Yassin, who returned to Mogadishu yesterday, could create political and security unrest.
This comes after Fahad Yassin was detained by the Djibouti authorities from travelling to Mogadishu but a private jet had picked him and landed straight in Mogadishu from Turkey.
The former NISA commander, who is allegedly rumored in connection with the assassination of Ikraan Tahliil, has not yet commented on the case, Fahad being said to be the most powerful man in the government, has negatively been implicated in the case, although he is still defending himself with Farmajo being by his side
Ahmed Mohamed Nur who was appointed by prime minister Mohamed Hussein Roble as Somalia Internal Security Minister yesterday met with Qali Mohamud who is the mother of slain female Intelligence officer Ikran Tahlil Farah who paid him a courtesy call at his office.
The new security Minister and the Family members deliberated on how to get justice for Ikran Tahlil who the family believes is still in the hands of the Somali National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA).
Qali Mohamud the mother of Ikran asked the Minister to allow them to convene a peaceful demonstration aimed at advocating for justice for their daughter.
The security Minister acknowledged their requests and gave them the nod to go for and hold a peaceful demo.
The internal security Minister Ahmed Mohamed said that the government of Somalia is in solidarity with the family and shares the grief and agony the family is passing through during this difficult moments.
“I first would like to express my deepest sympathy and sorrow over the loss of you daughter and declare that you are free to hold peaceful protest as every citizen has a right to hold peaceful demonstration as enshrined in Article 20 of the Constitution.” Said Ahmed.
However, Banadir Deputy security head Ali Yare has taken a swipe at the security Minister and rejected the call by the internal security Minister to have the Ikran’ s family to hold peaceful demonstration.
Speaking to Shabelle media in his office, the deputy Banadir security boss said that holding such demonstration could jeopardize the already fragile security situation on the ground.
” I want to state that calling for a protest at this critical moment when the country is gripped in tension is uncalled for and could disrupt peace in Mogadishu.”Said Ali Yare
