NAIROBI– Kenya and Somalia have taken a major step toward strengthening bilateral relations with a strategic meeting focused on enhancing immigration cooperation and regional mobility.

The meeting, hosted by Kenya’s Director General of Immigration Services, Ms. Evelyn Cheluget, brought together top officials from both nations, including Somalia’s Director General of the Immigration and Citizenship Agency, Mr. Mustaf Ali Duhulow, and Somalia’s Ambassador to Kenya, Mr. Jabril Ibrahim Abdulle. Kenya’s Secretary of Internal Security, Mr. Thomas Saka, and senior advisors from both governments were also in attendance.

The discussions centered on streamlining immigration service delivery, with a focus on travel facilitation, cross-border movement procedures, residency and dependent management, and the adoption of digital immigration systems.

Both delegations expressed a shared commitment to promoting legal, safe, and efficient travel between the two countries through improved facilitation procedures and cross-border information sharing.

Ambassador Jabril Ibrahim Abdulle emphasized the significance of the meeting, stating, “We joined this strategic dialogue to lay the foundation for deeper regional integration, the free movement of people, and mutual growth.

Both sides have agreed on key benchmarks to support the legal, safe, and coordinated movement of citizens between Kenya and Somalia.”

In her remarks, DG Cheluget assured the Somali delegation of Kenya’s unwavering commitment to mutual cooperation in immigration matters. “Our goal is to create seamless systems that reflect the spirit of partnership and regional unity,” she said.

The meeting concluded with both parties agreeing to establish joint working groups to monitor progress and implement the discussed framework signaling a new chapter in Kenya-Somalia relations.
