MOGADISHU– The Prime Minister of Federal republic of Somalia Hamza Abdi Barre on Sunday evening received delegation of members of parliament from East African community at his office in Mogadishu.

PM Hamza thanked EAC governments for the role they played in approving Somalia to join East African community, he also urged the members to fast tracking completion of technical issues and ensure Somalia’s interaction with East African community.

“I urge the members of the EAC Regional Organization to continue supporting efforts to harmonize policies and regulations, to create a favorable business environment for investors and entrepreneurs. They should continue to strengthen cooperation in regional security and the promotion of peace and stability.” .said PM Hamza.

Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre presented the contribution of Somalia to the membership of the East African Regional Organization and the opportunities of the countries that are united in this market to inherit from the membership of Somalia.

Early March this year, The Federal Republic of Somalia joined the East African Community as the bloc’s 8th Partner State after officially depositing her instrument of ratification of the Treaty of Accession with the EAC Secretary General at a ceremony held at the EAC Headquarters in Arusha, Tanzania.

Somalia’s Minister of Commerce and Industry, Hon. Jibril Abdirashid Haji Abdi, presented the Horn of Africa nation’s instrument of ratification to the EAC Secretary General, Hon. (Dr.) Peter Mathuki, completing the admission process in line with EAC Procedure for Admission of new members.

In line with the EAC Admission Procedure for new members, Dr. Mathuki subsequently pronounced the Federal Republic of Somalia (FRS) as a new member of the Community after receiving the instrument of ratification from the Hon. Abdi.

Somalia is also expected to elect nine (9) Members of Parliament to the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) and appoint a Judge to sit in the First Instance Division of the East African Court of Justice (EACJ).
