Somalia’s government on Monday hailed two young innovators after they won honors at a regional competition, highlighting the country’s growing footprint in technology and entrepreneurship across East Africa.

State Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Ali Mohamed Omar received Abdinassir Abdulkadir Mohamed and Aisha Usman Iiko in Mogadishu following their success at the East African Youth Awards, held in Arusha, Tanzania.

The awards platform brings together young innovators from across the East African Community to showcase projects in fields such as technology, business and sustainable development.

Omar said the recognition reflected the “rising contribution of Somali youth” to regional progress and described the achievement as a source of national pride.

“This milestone demonstrates the creativity and potential of our young people,” he said, adding that the government would continue efforts to create an environment that supports innovation and entrepreneurship.

Somalia has in recent years seen increased youth-led activity in startups and digital services, despite ongoing economic and security challenges.

Suleiman Ali Abshir , a political scientist based in mogadishu said regional platforms such as the East African Youth Awards are helping amplify visibility for emerging talent from countries rebuilding their institutions and economies.

The government said it aims to expand opportunities for young innovators to develop and scale their ideas, both regionally and globally.

The East African Community, which includes Somalia and its regional neighbours, has been promoting cross-border collaboration in trade, technology and youth development as part of its integration agenda.
