The SIMAD AI Institute has officially announced the AI & Robotics Hackathon 2026, a three-day innovation challenge aimed at empowering Somali youth to develop artificial intelligence and robotics solutions for some of the country’s most pressing real-world challenges.
Scheduled to take place in Mogadishu from September 15 to 17, 2026, the hackathon will bring together students, software developers, engineers, researchers and technology enthusiasts to transform innovative ideas into practical solutions capable of addressing challenges across sectors including healthcare, education, agriculture, governance, security and climate resilience.
Held under the theme, “AI & Robotics for Solving Real-World Challenges in Somalia,” the event seeks to nurture the next generation of Somali innovators by encouraging participants to design intelligent technologies with the potential to improve lives and accelerate national development.
According to the organisers, the competition will provide participants with an opportunity to collaborate with peers, showcase their technical skills and develop prototypes that could evolve into scalable innovations for Somalia’s growing digital economy.

The initiative reflects the increasing role of artificial intelligence in solving complex development challenges while positioning Somali youth to compete in the rapidly expanding global technology industry.
The launch of the hackathon comes as Somalia experiences growing investment in digital transformation, with universities, technology hubs and private sector innovators increasingly embracing artificial intelligence, robotics and emerging technologies.
The SIMAD AI Institute has been at the forefront of promoting research, innovation and advanced technology education in Somalia, supporting young innovators through training, academic research and industry collaboration.
The institute is part of SIMAD University, one of Somalia’s leading higher education institutions, which has expanded its focus on science, technology and innovation as the country works to build a knowledge-based economy capable of creating employment opportunities for its youthful population.
Artificial intelligence is increasingly viewed as a strategic tool for improving public services, strengthening healthcare systems, modernising agriculture, enhancing education and supporting disaster response across developing countries, including Somalia.
Technology experts say initiatives such as hackathons play a critical role in creating innovation ecosystems by connecting young talent with mentors, investors and industry leaders, while encouraging practical problem-solving and entrepreneurship.
The AI & Robotics Hackathon 2026 is expected to attract participants from universities and technology communities across Somalia, providing a platform for aspiring innovators to demonstrate how emerging technologies can contribute to sustainable development and long-term economic growth.
