NAIROBI- The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) today received a fleet of operational vehicles donated by the Government of the United Kingdom through the British High Commission under the East Africa Border Security Programme.
The handover ceremony, held at the DCI Headquarters, was marked by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and the official flagging off of the vehicles by the Director of Criminal Investigations, Mr. Mohamed I. Amin and His Excellency the British High Commissioner to Kenya, H.E Mr. Matt Baugh OBE.
Speaking at the ceremony, His Excellency the British High Commissioner to Kenya, Mr. Matt Baugh OBE, said the donation and the MoU reflect a shared determination to disrupt the criminal networks that traffic people, smuggle migrants and forge documents across East Africa.
“Organised immigration crime is a shared threat. It exploits the most vulnerable, undermines lawful migration and funds wider organised crime. The United Kingdom is proud to stand with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations and the National Police Service.
These vehicles will give the Counter Organised Immigration Crime Team the reach it needs to investigate, intercept and dismantle those networks. Partnership only matters if it produces results on the ground — safer borders, protected victims and successful prosecutions. That is the standard we will hold ourselves to together.”
The High Commissioner commended the professionalism of Kenyan investigators and reaffirmed the UK’s long-term commitment under the East Africa Border Security Programme, working with implementing partners including Mercy Corps and Valar.
In his remarks, Mr. Amin described the occasion as a significant milestone in the longstanding partnership between Kenya and the United Kingdom, noting that the collaboration continues to strengthen institutional capacities in addressing emerging security threats and transnational organized crime.
The Director highlighted the growing complexity of crimes such as human trafficking, migrant smuggling, document fraud and other cross-border criminal activities, emphasizing that effective responses require strong partnerships, intelligence sharing, and coordinated action among security agencies and stakeholders.
Mr. Amin further noted that the operational vehicles will significantly enhance the capabilities of the specialized Counter Organized Immigration Crime Team, enabling officers to respond swiftly, conduct field operations efficiently, and intensify efforts to identify, investigate, and dismantle criminal networks operating within and across borders.
He assured partners that the resources would be utilized responsibly and effectively, translating the support into stronger investigations, better protection for vulnerable persons and successful prosecution of those involved in organized crime.
The Director also expressed gratitude to the British Government, the British High Commission, and implementing partners including Mercy Corps’ Sarah Gibbons and Allison Higgins, Valar for their unwavering support in strengthening Kenya’s law enforcement capabilities and promoting regional security cooperation.
The ceremony concluded with the flagging off of the vehicles, witnessed by among others Ben Fisher of the border security programme and Joaana Oser from valar,symbolizing a renewed commitment by the DCI and its partners to safeguarding borders, protecting vulnerable communities, and advancing collective efforts against transnational organized crime.
