Governor Jama, in his remarks, emphasized Garissa’s strategic geopolitical location, vast untapped resources, and economic potential. He described the county as a vital gateway to the greater North Eastern region and a catalyst for long-term regional transformation.
Speaker Idle highlighted a number of bills currently under consideration by the Assembly that are aimed at addressing critical regional challenges. These include the Garissa County Disaster Risk Management Bill, the Garissa County Livestock Marketing Bill, the Garissa County Climate Change Bill, and the Garissa County Rangelands Management Bill.
He emphasized that these legislative efforts are tailored to build local resilience and promote sustainable development.
The delegation’s visit is part of a renewed push to revitalize development initiatives across North Eastern Kenya under the framework of the North-East Kenya Advisory Group, established by the Office of the President. This strategic platform is designed to address longstanding regional challenges through strengthened coordination and high-level support.
Central to the mission is the Transition Paper developed and adopted in 2022 by the State Department for the Development of ASALs. The document outlines a collaborative approach based on key pillars of peace and security, education and youth opportunity, inclusive economic development and infrastructure, climate resilience and drought response, and women’s inclusion and empowerment.
The delegation included ambassadors from the United Kingdom and the European Union, the U.S. Chargé d’Affaires, the United Nations Resident Coordinator, the WFP Country Director, and senior officials from the Office of the President.
Garissa Township MCA and Minority Leader thanked the delegation for the visit and assured them of the committment of the Assembly in enacting the necessary legislative frameworks that would facilitate the implementation of the ambitious plan to develop the region
