NAIROBI- The Health Cabinet Secretary, Aden Duale, on Thursday chaired a high-level meeting today at Afya House aimed at expediting the implementation of the National Equipment Service Program (NESP).

The meeting, which brought together key stakeholders, including the Council of Governors (represented by CEO Ms. Mary Mwiti) and the Project Implementation Unit (PIU) of NESP, discussed strategies to enhance the program’s rollout across the country’s counties.

The discussions were centered on a comprehensive review of NESP’s operational framework, focusing on improving healthcare facilities at the county level. This is seen as a significant move to address the challenges of access to quality healthcare in rural and underserved areas.

CS Duale emphasized the program’s importance in advancing Kenya’s journey towards Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

He commended the team for their dedication, noting that NESP is poised to play a crucial role in ensuring that Kenyans have access to affordable, quality healthcare services.

The meeting also delved into county-specific equipment placement strategies. One of the key points raised was the need for effective county sensitization to ensure the successful adoption and implementation of the program at the local level.

It was agreed that targeted outreach and awareness campaigns would be vital in addressing potential challenges and ensuring smooth integration into county health systems.

Dr. Ouma Oluga, the Principal Secretary for Medical Services, also attended the meeting and echoed Hon. Duale’s sentiments, highlighting the long-term benefits that NESP will bring to the health sector.

The PIU team, led by Dr. Isaac Kimani, provided a detailed overview of the progress made thus far in the program’s implementation.

The meeting also underscored the importance of collaboration between national and county governments to ensure the successful deployment of health equipment, which will bolster the country’s health infrastructure.

The NESP is part of Kenya’s broader strategy to provide quality healthcare services to all its citizens. By equipping public health facilities with state-of-the-art medical equipment, the program is expected to reduce the strain on urban health facilities while improving the quality of care in rural and marginalized areas.

As the government works towards the goal of Universal Health Coverage, the successful implementation of NESP is expected to bring the country closer to achieving its health objectives, ultimately improving health outcomes and saving lives across the nation.
