NAIROBI– Cabinet Secretary for Health Aden Duale on Monday chaired a high-level consultative meeting with senior technical officials from the Ministry of Health to chart the way forward for the operationalization of the Kenya National Public Health Institute (KNPHI).

The meeting, held at Afya House, focused on anchoring the KNPHI on five strategic pillars: Surveillance and Health Security, Emergency Preparedness and Response, Laboratory Strengthening, Public Health Research, and Public Health Workforce Development.

These pillars form the foundation for strengthening Kenyaโ€™s health system and ensuring better preparedness against public health threats, including pandemics.

CS Duale underscored the critical role of the KNPHI in advancing the country’s health agenda, including the implementation of Universal Health Coverage (UHC). He called for a responsive, people-centered health system built on trust, transparency, and professionalism.

โ€œThe prosperity of any nation is measured by the health of its citizens. We must ensure that our public health systems are robust, inclusive, and capable of addressing both current and emerging health challenges,โ€ said CS Duale.

The Cabinet Secretary also emphasized the need for a factual and transparent flow of information within the Ministry, adding that integrity must be central to all communication, particularly during this phase of health sector reforms.

Present during the meeting were Principal Secretaries Dr. Ouma Oluga (Medical Services) and Ms. Mary Muthoni (Public Health and Professional Standards), as well as the Director General for Health, Dr. Patrick Amoth.

The operationalization of the KNPHI is expected to play a pivotal role in enhancing Kenya’s public health infrastructure and ensuring the country’s resilience to future health emergencies.
