Garissa County — Garissa Women Representative Amina Udgoon Siyad, accompanied by Cabinet Secretary for Special Programmes Geoffrey Ruku and Township MP Major Dekow, on Monday visited Suuq Mugdi market.
The main aim of the visit was to condole with victims of the recent fire that destroyed a large portion of the busy trading centre.
The leaders met affected traders and families to assess the damage and pledge both immediate relief and long-term government support.
“The loss is heartbreaking, but our commitment to stand with the affected families and traders remains unwavering,” she said.
Udgoon announced a donation of Ksh 1 million to the market fire response committee to help address immediate needs, adding, “Even as we continue strategizing and writing to the National Government Affirmative Action Fund (NGAAF) for emergency support, we must act quickly on the ground.”

CS Ruku affirmed that the Ministry of Special Programmes would deliver food supplies to sustain displaced families, and praised Udgoon’s leadership.
“Your county MP came to my office and said she cannot go without me, to underscore the government’s resolve to help those affected by the fire,” said CS Ruku.
He also revealed that President William Ruto has pledged to construct a new market in Garissa, with plans now at the final procurement stage.
The county MP thanked the Deputy Governor, County Government of Garissa, and local security teams for their rapid response and ongoing support, emphasizing, “We now call for transparency, coordination, and urgency in the recovery efforts.
The market deserves a fair, swift, and compassionate rebuilding process.”
Property of unknown value was destroyed in the inferno that swept through the main market in the town.
However, the cause of the fire was not immediately established and it was not the first time that a fire razed down stalls and shops in the commercial hub.
