MOMBASA– Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has announced a series of far-reaching reforms to enhance pharmaceutical regulation, bolster digital health systems, and combat counterfeit medicines in Kenya.
Speaking during the official opening of the 21st Annual Scientific Conference of the Kenya Pharmaceutical Association (KPA) in Mombasa County, CS Duale emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring access to quality, safe, and affordable healthcare products.
The conference, held under the theme “Enhancing Access to Quality, Safe and Affordable Health Products and Technologies for Sustainable Healthcare in Kenya,” also marks 50 years of KPA’s service to the pharmaceutical sector.
It has drawn pharmaceutical technologists, health professionals, policymakers, and stakeholders from across the country to reflect on progress and chart the way forward.
In his keynote address, CS Duale recognized the pivotal role of pharmaceutical technologists in the delivery of Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

He highlighted their contribution to strengthening health supply chains, enhancing community pharmacies, promoting rational medicine use, and improving primary healthcare delivery.
“Our goal under the UHC framework is to ensure every Kenyan has access to essential medicines and technologies provided by qualified professionals through safe and efficient systems,” CS Duale stated.
The Cabinet Secretary announced the Ministry of Health’s digital transformation agenda, which includes the rollout of four critical systems aimed at improving transparency and efficiency in the pharmaceutical sector:
- National Product Catalogue
- Drug Formularies
- National Logistics Management System
- Track-and-Trace Systems
These tools, he explained, will be key to eradicating counterfeit medicines, minimizing wastage of public health commodities, and improving accountability in the national supply chain.
The event, hosted by KPA President Eric Sedah and Secretary General Eric Gichane, celebrates half a century of the association’s contributions to the pharmaceutical profession in Kenya.
The gathering serves as a critical platform for stakeholders to deliberate on policy, innovation, and the future of pharmaceutical services particularly in light of the government’s drive toward universal access to high-quality health products and technologies.
