Mogadishu– Heavy torrential rains that fell for over eight hours in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, have resulted in the deaths of a mother and her child and caused widespread damage to infrastructure, local authorities confirmed Saturday.
The victims died in the Hamar Jajab district after their home collapsed due to flooding, according to officials from the Banadir regional administration who are continuing to assess affected areas.
The intense rainfall also caused severe flooding across several neighborhoods, making key roads impassable and severely disrupting public transport.
Some of the worst-affected areas include newly constructed roads in Howlwadaag and Hodan districts.
In certain parts of the city, water remains stagnant on the roads, forcing vehicles to divert through residential streets.
Authorities have urged residents to avoid flooded areas and have directed all district commissioners to assist those impacted, especially families living in older or vulnerable homes.
Flash floods are a recurring issue in Mogadishu, where poor urban drainage systems and rapid city expansion continue to leave residents exposed to dangerous weather events.
The Banadir regional administration emphasized the need for urgent support to affected communities as damage assessments continue.
