The Federal Government of Somalia has today officially handed over the ministry of defense to the newly appointed Minister of Ahmed Moalim Fiqi, who was recently named by the Prime Minister following a rapid leadership change within the ministry just under 30 days since the last appointment.
The handover ceremony, held in Mogadishu, was attended by top government officials, including Deputy Prime Minister Salah Ahmed Jama, who formally transferred responsibilities to Minister Fiqi.
In their remarks, senior officials urged the new minister to fulfill the demanding responsibilities ahead, with particular emphasis on the fight against Al-Shabaab in the country.
During the ceremony, Minister Fiqi made a strong and clear statement, expressing his intention to avoid the internal conflicts that had previously existed between the Ministry of Defense and the Somali National Army’s Command. “Competition is what led us here. I will work to ensure that no further rift or confrontation arises between the ministry and the military leadership,” he said.
Fiqi also stressed that he would not be a minister who negotiates with commanders for personal gain. “You will not find me engaging in personal dealings with commanders or misusing my position for individual interests,” he declared firmly.
On the fight against Al-Shabaab, Fiqi displayed strong confidence, describing the group as a familiar enemy. “Al-Shabaab are like small things that are growing I know very well. I am confident that during my time in office, we will eliminate them from the country,” he stated.
He pledged to carry out his duties with integrity, promising to improve the security framework, strengthen counterterrorism efforts, and rebuild public trust in national defense institutions.
This sudden leadership shift comes after the former Minister of Defense, Jibril Abdullahi Haji Abdi, was removed from office after serving for only 21 days. He has now been appointed the country’s Second Deputy Prime Minister.
The federal government is expected to intensify efforts toward strengthening national defense and reforming the military to address ongoing security challenges across several regions.
Diplomatic analysts suggest the reshuffle followed recent military success, where Somali forces led by the Army Chief reclaimed control of Aden Yabal district in Middle Shabelle from Al-Shabaab. The development has raised questions about the intelligence and coordination behind the operation, highlighting the need for unity between the defense ministry and military leadership.
