WAJIR– A high level security meeting has on Thursday taken place in Wajir county bringing together leaders from the Northern region, Somalia and those from coastal town of Lamu.
The security conference which also encompassed top security officials happened under the auspices of re-evaluating and reconsidering the security approaches in the expansive region.
The leaders extensively discussed the state of security and ways of bolstering the stability in the region which ha become under the mercy of Al-Shabab in recent months.
“As the political and administrative leaders of the region, we converged to strategize against regional security threats like terrorism and to make other suggestions to counter extremism and radicalization.” sad Wajir governor Ahmed Abdullahi.

Formulating a framework through heightened coordination among the relevant bodies geared towards combating security threats possed by the insurgents was also covered in the meeting.
The session also provided an avenue to the leaders and stakeholders in the security sector exchange ideas on ways of enhancing cooperation between the community and the security apparatus in a bid to curtail the attacks from the militants group.
The leaders who spoke in the meeting expressed their solidarity and support to the security personnel to help them thwart Al-Shabab threats and in advance make the region safe from the incessant attacks carried out by the Al-qaeda affiliate group.
The meeting comes amidst sustained operations by Kenya government forces and the Somali security forces against Al-Shabaab who have been wrecking havoc in the porous border planting IEDs and at times laying ambush on security personnel from both sides thus inflicting them with injuries and even causing death.
Kenya interior minister Kindiki Kithure announced a fortnight ago that the government had reconsidered the re- opening of Kenya – Somalia birder following recurrent Al-Shabab attacks which has claimed the lives of security forces and civilians.
