As part of his two-day official visit to Kenya, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni of Uganda today delivered a High-Level Lecture of Opportunity at the National Defence College (NDC) in Nairobi.

Upon his arrival at the College, President Museveni was received by Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Defence, Hon. Soipan Tuya, and the Commandant of the National Defence College, Lieutenant General J. S. Mwinyikai.

While addressing participants of Course 28 (2025/2026), President Museveni called for a transformative shift in the ideological approach of African leadership. He traced the missteps of past African leadership from colonial rule to post-independence highlighting the misdiagnosis of the continent’s fundamental challenges, which he said fostered tribalism and societal fragmentation.

Emphasizing the need for a departure from identity-based politics, President Museveni urged future military and policy leaders to prioritize patriotism, economic productivity, and regional integration.

“The tribe is not the magic, the nation and the region are,” he stated, underlining the importance of national unity and regional cooperation over parochial affiliations.

He advocated for the strengthening of institutions, cross-border collaboration, and expansion of economic production as the bedrock for sustainable development. President Museveni warned that national markets alone are insufficient for driving meaningful economic growth and prosperity in Africa.

He further encouraged the upcoming generation of African leaders to focus on creating value, accessing wider markets, and advancing integration efforts across the continent.

Later in the afternoon, President Museveni departed the country and was seen off at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport by Hon. Wycliffe Ambetsa Oparanya, Cabinet Secretary for Co-operatives and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) Development, who served as the Escort of Honour.
