Dhusamerab– Acting Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) boss Yasin Abdullahi Farey has been elected as an MP in Galmudug.
Yassin got 65 votes while his opponent Mohamed Ali Ulusow garnered 20 votes. Three votes were spoiled. Each MP is elected by 101 delegates.
He was appointed in late October to lead the intelligence agency in acting capacity following the controversial sacking of his predecessor Fahad Yasin over the case of missing and allegedly “dead” soy agent Ikran Tahlil Farah.
Yassin Farey is one of President Farmajo’s closest allies, and opponents of the government see his candidacy as part of Villa Somalia’s bid to stay in office.
The election of Farey comes amid complaints by clan elders rejecting his candidature on grounds that he was being fronted by Villa Somalia.
Former NISA commander General Tuuryare, a candidate for the seat, recently accused the Somali presidency of looting the seat.
Election for the remaining second seat of the day is underway.
