MOGADISHU– United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) has welcomed the recent talks between Somalia and Somaliland leaders in Djibouti.

In a statement on Sunday, UNSOM said the talks play a pivotal role in the coming together of both sides that have been apart for many years.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and his breakaway region counterpart Muse Bihi Abdi engage talks on Thursday in Djibouti city resulting in the successive issuance of communiqué.

The communique outlined that both sides will establish committees to further advance the talks.

Djibouti President Ismael Omar Guelleh presided over the meeting between the two leaders.

The United Nations in Somalia also commended President Guelleh of his tireless efforts to fostering cohesion in the region and convening meeting with the two Head of States.

Somaliland announced it broke away from the entire Somalia in 1991 after the collapse of the military regime of late President Mohamed Siyad Barre.
