Wajir First Lady Rukia Abdinasir Demands Justice for Gaala Aden, Urges End to Forced Marriages and Gender-Based Violence

The tragic and senseless murder of 17-year-old Gaala Aden has shocked the nation, prompting widespread condemnation and calls for justice. Gaala, who was forcibly married to a 55-year-old man, tragically lost her life when she was burned to death.

This horrifying act has brought the issue of forced marriages and gender-based violence into the national spotlight, with Wajir County First Lady Rukia Abdinasir leading the charge for justice.

In a heartfelt statement released following the news of Gaala’s death, First Lady Abdinasir expressed her deep sorrow and called for urgent action to address the growing violence against women and girls in communities across the country.

“It is heartbreaking and deeply disturbing to learn of the tragic and senseless murder of Gaala Aden,” she said. “This horrific act is yet another painful reminder of the urgent need to end forced marriages and all forms of violence against women and girls in our communities.”

Gaala’s life, marked by promise and potential, was tragically cut short by a brutal and inhumane act.

Abdinasir extended her deepest condolences to Gaala’s family and loved ones, stating that no parent should ever have to endure such unimaginable pain. “We mourn with them and stand in solidarity as they seek justice for their daughter,” she added. “Her life was stolen by cruelty, but her memory must ignite real change.”

The First Lady’s statement condemned the barbaric practice of forced marriages, a cultural practice that continues to subject young girls to violence and deny them their basic human rights. “No girl should ever be forced into marriage, denied her right to education, or subjected to violence,” Abdinasir asserted. “Gaala’s story must not be just another statistic, it must be a turning point.”

Abdinasir also called on law enforcement agencies to ensure that justice is served, noting that the suspect in Gaala’s death is already in custody. She emphasized that the crime must be treated as a criminal matter, with no allowances for informal settlements or traditional practices that allow perpetrators of gender-based violence to escape justice. “This must be treated as a criminal matter, and there should be NO maslah in such cases,” she stated firmly.

In her call for systemic change, the First Lady urged society to challenge harmful cultural practices that continue to oppress and endanger young girls. “We must come together as a society to challenge and eliminate harmful cultural practices,” she said. “Change begins with each of us by speaking out, educating our communities, and ensuring that the law protects every girl’s right to a safe and dignified life.”

Abdinasir concluded her statement by urging the public to turn their grief and anger into meaningful action. “Let us turn our grief and anger into action,” she said. “May Gaala Aden’s soul rest in peace, and may her story inspire a future where no girl suffers the same fate. It is our duty to ensure that this never happens again.”

The tragic death of Gaala Aden serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing struggle to protect young girls from violence and exploitation. First Lady Rukia Abdinasir’s impassioned call for justice and systemic change has sparked a renewed conversation about the need to end forced marriages and protect the rights of women and girls across Kenya.
