GARISSA COUNTY-NEP Girls High School in Garissa county has been closed indefinitely after suspected arson attacks by students.
The board of management in a statement said they have resolved to temporarily close down the institution’s boarding wing after an inferno razed down a dormitory on Sunday.
After holding a crisis meeting, the board said they suspended the boarding wing because 80 per cent of the students can operate from home and will meanwhile become day scholars.
“The boarding wing is to be closed since a majority of the girls live within Garissa town.
They attend classes during the day and go home for the remaining part of the day,” the recommendation read in part.
The board said they are informed about the escapades in the school and the girls might need some time to go home and relax over the congested academic calendar.
They stated that Form One and Two will close on Friday, December 3 while Form Three and Four on December 20 and underscoring that the board will convene a meeting to deliberate on re-opening schedules in January next year.
The school however said that parents will pay for all the destroyed property in the school upon resumption of learning and that the relevant authorities have been called in to draw the costs of the damages.
This comes amid growing arson attacks in schools in the country with stakeholders arguing that the students have been overwhelmed by the congested academic calendar.
