Somalia Government forces backed by their Galmudug counterpart have recaptured the town of Guriel which has been under the control of the moderate Islamic jihadist Ahlu Sunna Wal Jamacah for weeks.
Security sources and journalists in the town say that the government forces have retaken strategic places in the besieged town after a fierce offensive ensued between the two sides.
However, other reports say that the dislodged group Ahlu Sunna is still mounting retaliatory attacks as heavy weaponry and artillery rent the air.
Heavy build up Somalia military and contingent of other security officers are seen in the town with multiple sources in the town intimating that the government forces have taken full control of the police station and the district headquarters.
Tension is still high in the town with heavy exchange of fire is still on going in the eastern part of the town.
The joint government security forces stormed the town early Saturday morning precipitating a confrontation between them and Ahlu Sunna.
A statement from the United Nations (UN) on Thursday stated that a large number of people have displaced in the town since the government of Somalia started deploying more security personnel on the ground in a bid to depose and remove from the town the militant group.
