Oromia Regional state president Shimles Abdisa and the delegation led by him arrived in Jigjiga, the capital of the Somali region earlier today.
Somali regional state president Mustafe Mohumed and some of his Cabinet members warmly welcomed him at Garad Wiil-Waal Airport in Jigjiga.
After that, the entourage of the President of Oromia accompanied by President Mustafe Cagjar left for Jinacsani town in Oromia region.
This is Oromia president’s first visit to the country since he was elected as the president of the Oromia Region.
Regional leaders of Ethiopia’s Oromia and Somali states gathered in Jigjiga for a conference aimed at resolving the recent conflict between the two.
The Oromia–Somali clashes began in December 2016 following territorial disputes between them. Hundreds of people were killed and more than 1.5 million people fled their homes.
The Oromo have been claiming that the territory is their ancestral land and that the Somali families had been brought in from Ethiopian Somali regional.
The situation escalated when the two communities’ clansmen allegedly started revenge attacks.
