ODM party leader Raila Odinga has promised a package of goodies to the North-Eastern region if he becomes president after the 2022 elections.
Speaking at a meeting with a delegation from Marsabit County at Chungwa House on Wednesday, Odinga said he would focus on improving infrastructure in the region, which he said has a good potential for economic growth.
The ODM leader pledged to build a well-connected road network linking Marsabit to Mombasa and Ethiopia to enhance trade in the Northern Kenya region.
He further promised to establish a meat processing plant in the region in a bid to improve the livestock breeding industry, referring to a similar thriving plant in Botswana that exports meat products to international markets.
The former premier also committed to establishing a leather processing plant in the region to reduce the importation of leather products from the neighbouring countries.
“All those who practice cattle keeping should not be poor…..and we shall build a meat processing plant in Marsabit…..we also see leather products being imported from Ethiopia and sold in Moyale yet we have a large market in the country. We shall build a leather processing plant and increase employment,” Odinga added.
While drumming up support for the social welfare plan of giving a Kshs6,000 monthly stipend to low earning citizens, Mr. Odinga said that his government will ensure proper settlement across the region and curb the impoverished state of livelihoods.
He championed his ‘Azimio la Umoja’ call, saying unity of the country is key as the country heads to elections.
Odinga was accompanied by Senate minority leader John Mbadi, Dagoretti North MP Simba Arati and other ODM leaders.
