WAJIR –Four people have been confirmed dead at Andaki location in Wajir South after the matatu they were traveling in ran over an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) on Wednesday morning..
This comes barely two days after 7 People were killed and 13 others injured in a road side blast that hit a Matatu that was enroute to Mandera town from Arabia
Speaking to the Media, Outgoing North Eastern regional police commander Bunei Rono said police have arrested one suspect in connection with the attack and that he wa being grilled by detectives over what he understands about the explosion.
Bunei said that Police have launched a track down for two vehicles that had diverted from the main highway and said that they suspect to have a hand in the explosion.
“Before the incident happened, I am met to understand that there were some two vehicles which were Infront and upon approaching the area they diverted there was a possibility that those two vehicles knew that was an explosion” said Rono.
Casualties of the explosion were rushed to Mandera county referral hospital where they are receiving treatment for their injuries.
According to medics at the hospital they received 13 wounded patients whom they have stabilised with four of them being in serious condition.
The 14 seater Matatu was headed to Mandera town from Arabiya Mandera county before running over a the landmine bomb which police said was planted a night before.
Police said they believe the attackers were targeting a convoy of General Service Unit ( GSU) officers who were on routine patrol in the fragile area.
This comes days after the European embassies and US issued terror alerts to their citizens over looming terror attack and urged them not to visit crowded and public places and remain vigilant when in recreational facilities, shopping malls and restaurants.
Kenya police however maintain they have beefed up security across the country by deploying more security officers who are on routine patrol.
