GARISSA – Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha has today opened the Garissa Cancer Center which will offer affordable services to cancer patients in Garissa and the entire North Eastern region.
Speaking during the launch, the CS noted that the launch of the Garissa Regional Cancer Center is a major milestone in the fight against cancer in Kenya and marks a new era of specialized care in the Northern region.
“The facility is set to revolutionize access to cancer care and help address the growing burden of cancer, which has become a leading cause of death globally.” Said CS Nakhumicha

On the other hand, Garissa County Governor Nathif Jama appreciated the national government for its commitment to alleviating the pain of cancer patients in this region by availing resources for the specialized cancer treatment center.
“The launch of this unit is a milestone for Garissa County. We are proud to unveil today a facility where screening, treatment and palliative care will be facilitated and prioritized,” said the governor.
The governor acknowledged that the County Government of Garissa had competent medics and facilities to handle the scourge, adding that Garissa County Referral Hospital does not only serve Garissa residents but also Kenyans from Tana River, Kitui, Isiolo and the entire North Eastern.
According to the statistics from the ministry of the health most cancer cases in Kenya are diagnosed at late stages, leading to poor treatment outcomes and low survival rates,
However, the launch of the Garissa Regional Cancer Center is set to be instrumental in scaling down the rate of cancer cases in northern Kenya.
The ministry of health has in the recent days set up 10 cancer regional centers across the country with the aim of providing basic chemotherapy medicines and expanding access to cancer treatment services, making a positive impact on the lives of thousands of cancer patients.
