Somali President Mohamud arrives in Nairobi for 6th UNEA meeting

NAIROBI– President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has on Wednesday arrived in Nairobi for the 6th Session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA).

President Mohamud was recieved at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) by Deputy President of Kenya Rigathi Gachagua accompanied by minster Aden Duale ( Defence), Mithika Linturi (Agriculture) and Somalia Ambasador to Kenya Jabril Ibrahim.

In a statement posted on official social media pages Gachagua said Kenya and Somalia enjoy deep-rooted ties mutually beneficial to both countries.

“On behalf of President William Ruto, it was a pleasure to receive Somalia President H.E. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud at JKIA, Nairobi. President Sheikh Mohamud is in the country for the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-6) convention. “ said DP Gachagua.

President Mohamud  is expected to join other world leaders for this year’s United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) under the theme of ‘’effective, inclusive and sustainable multilateral actions to tackle climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution’’.

According to the statement from the Presidental palace, President Mohamud is scheduled to highlight Somalia’s unique environmental challenges, particularly the climate-induced humanitarian situation in the country by exploring ways to work collaboratively with global partners to build a sustainable future for Somalia.

“Additionally, President Hassan Sheikh will touch on the challenges hampering peace, stability, and sustainable development in the region. He will discuss how certain destabilizing unilateral actions threaten to exacerbate the worsening situation.” Reads statement from villa Somalia.

On the sidelines of the meeting President Mohamud is set to engage in bilateral meetings with visiting head of states and government to strengthen ties and explore opportunities for cooperation on environmental issues.

World leaders are in Nairobi to debate and make decisions on 19 pressing environmental issues at world largest environmental gathering.
