WAJIR -Hundreds of Wajir county residents today turn out in the famous Qorahey ground to seek intercession from Allah from the devastating drought that has wrecked havoc in the entire North Eastern province.
The special pray called Salatul Istisqaa saw worshippers from all walks of life converge in Qorahey in unison leaving behind their activities and halting businesses for hours.
Religious leaders who spoke at the event called upon the local residents to strictly adhere to the teachings of Islam and avoid engaging in acts that will attract the wrath of Allah( SW)
“It is good for us to abstain from what Allah has prohibited from us and stick to his commands. It is no doubt that we will get the blessings of Allah including the evasive rain that we are supplicating for.” said Sheikh Abdiwahab, a prominent religious scholar in the county.
He further admonished the local adminstration to discharge their duties diligently and nab people who are selling and brewing alcohol in the county which he said has significantly contributed to the endless and continuous ravaging drought in Wajir.
“People are selling alcohols in our midst and no one is talking about it, even the chiefs are aware of the vice in their various jurisdiction but have become a rubber-stamp to it.Let us fight these vices and ensure we end them from our county.” said Sheikh Abdiwahab.
The devastating biting drought has led to starvation of hundreds of people and claimed the lives of livestock in the Arid and Semi- Arid counties leaving behind a trail of destruction with the distraught pastoralists gasping for relief from the Almighty Allah.
President Uhuru Kenyatta last month declared the drought facing parts of the country a National disasters and called for stepping up of efforts to alleviating the severe drought that has adversely affected pastoralists communities living in Asal counties.
Among those in attendance of the special prayer were; Wajir East MP Rashid Kassim, North Eastern SUPKEM regional coordinator Dr.Adan Yunis and a host of other prominent Muslim scholars in Wajir county
