MOGADISHU– Two people have been killed and scores of others injured after the Al-Qaeda affiliate terror group bombarded Somalia and Ethiopia military controlled base and an airport in the South West regional State in the wee hours of Tuesday morning, a police official confirmed to the media.
The militant group are said to have used heavy artillery and weapons in the attack on the airport and Ethiopian military base in the restive Baidoa city, which is holding House of representatives elections according to a statement from the police.
“A military base in Suuqa Hoolaha neighborhood in the city was also attacked by the terrorists and one soldier was killed and another one wounded,” said a police official.
“We don’t know the exact number of people killed or injured in the airport attack,” he said, adding that “we know a civilian was killed and several others were injured.” he added
A resident in the area, Haawo Ahmed Suleyman, told Anadolu Agency over the phone that the Somali National Army and Al-Shabaab terrorists were engaged in a fierce firefight.
Officials from the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) were not available for comments regarding the attack on the airport.
This comes days after mortar shells landed at the presidential palace in Baidoa where elections of members of parliament for the federal Somalia was underway causing hours of disruption.
