MANDERA COUNTY-Two police officers have been confirmed dead and 12 others injured after suspected Al- Shabaab militants laid an ambush to a vehicle carrying security officers at Bambo area, Mandera County.
The officers were reported to have been heading to Mandera town from Rhamu when their lorry was sprayed with bullets by the militants at about 9 am local time.
Eyewitnesses told the media that the officers were on officials duties and the Ill- fated vehicle was carrying food stuffs for security officers on patrol when the incident occurred.
The insurgents are said to have attempted to hurl a rocket propelled grenade on the vehicle but missed compelling to open fire on the lorry.
They fired bullets on the lorry as it cruised past where they had stsged the attack.” said a police official.
Locals said the militia have been roaming around the area in the past days and were allegedly strategising on where to plant their explosives.
Confirming the incident to the media, North Eastern regional police commandant Rono Brunei said a contingent of security personnel have been deployed on the ground in a bid to pursue and arrest those behind the ambush.
Mandera county has recently been experiencing rising cases of militia attacks and with the series of attacks launched suspectedly by the Al-Qaeda affiliate group reported to have surpassed 30 people amongst them being security officers patrolling the volatile areas.
