MOGADISHU- Somalia’s Federal Electoral body has distanced itself from a letter doing rounds on social media stating the suspension of the ongoing parliamentary elections by the Federal and State Electoral Commissions.

In a official statement carried on their website, the Federal Electoral Commission (FEC) termed the letter as baseless and misleading.

The letter which was circulating on social media platforms had stated that the Federal Electoral and Implementation Team (FEIT) and State Electoral and Implementation Team (SEIT) have suspended the elections.

Jubbaland Indirect Election Implementation Committee has also come out to clarify to the public that the elections will go on as planned and rubbished the letter that was being peddled on social media and said they have no knowledge or idea about its authenticity or otherwise and stated they have nothing to do with it.

The letter that has since been dismissed by the concerned relevant electoral authorities that stated that the State and Federal Electoral Commissions (SEITs) and the Federal Government (FEIT) have lodged a formal complaint with Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble and the leaders of the the regional States.

The letter also stated that the Dispute Resolution Committee have been discriminated and that their safety and security have been compromised and threatened.

This comes barely hours after PM Roble who spoke in Baidoa reiterated the ongoing parliamentary elections will not be stopped and urged the Federal and State Electoral commission to continue with their tasks of ensuring that the elections are concluded on time.

The ongoing Parliamentary elections have been marred with controversy and widespread claims of riggings by clans and opposition leaders who had vowed to oppose and boycott the electoral outcome saying it is a flawed process.
