GARISSA – The County Government of Garissa has set aside Sh.40 million to provide water and food to school going children as they prepare to sit for the national examinations next month.
This mitigation is purposely meant to stop students from missing these crucial examinations.
Speaking after charing the County Steering Group meeting on drought mitigation, Garissa Governor H.E Nathif Jama said each school would also receive a water tank that will be replenished by water bowsers until the situation improves.
Gvn. Nathif added he would personally take charge of drought mitigation efforts in the county to ensure transparency, proper reporting and curb duplication of intervention measures by the various agencies.
On his part, Area County Commissioner Boaz Cherutich said the move would address the soaring dropout rates in schools in the county due to drought. It would also ensure the retention of candidates set to sit this year’s exams.
Today’s meeting comes on the backdrop of last week’s meeting held between Governor’s from the ASAL Counties and the Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua to strategize on modalities to address drought situation in the country.
The Governor was accompanied by the Deputy Governor H.E Abdi Dagane, security heads and representatives of various organisations and agencies.
