NAIROBI— The Cabinet has approved additional financing for the construction of two key road sections in northern Kenya, a move expected to accelerate the completion of the strategic 750-kilometre Isiolo–Mandera corridor.

The decision was made during a Cabinet meeting chaired by President William Ruto at State House, Nairobi, on Tuesday.

According to the Cabinet dispatch, the Government has cleared additional funding for the 67-kilometre Modogashe–Samatar road section and the 76-kilometre Rhamu–Mandera road section.

The roads form part of the expansive Isiolo–Mandera Highway, one of the Government’s flagship infrastructure projects aimed at improving connectivity across northern Kenya.

Cabinet said the additional financing will speed up the completion of the strategic highway, enhance trade, improve access to essential services, and strengthen regional integration within the Horn of Africa.

“The additional financing will accelerate completion of the strategic highway, improving connectivity, trade and access to essential services across Northern Kenya, while strengthening regional integration in the Horn of Africa,” the Cabinet said in a statement.

Once completed, the corridor is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Isiolo and Mandera, open up remote areas to investment, facilitate the movement of goods and people, and improve access to healthcare, education and government services.

The road is also expected to strengthen cross-border trade with neighbouring countries, including Ethiopia and Somalia, while enhancing security operations and supporting economic growth in Kenya’s northern frontier.

The Cabinet’s approval underscores the Government’s continued commitment to investing in infrastructure as part of its broader strategy to stimulate economic development, improve regional connectivity and unlock the economic potential of northern Kenya.
