MOGADISHU-Somali government has welcomed the announcement by the European Union to provide a budgetary support payment to the Federal government.
In statements carried on their official Twitter handles, The Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre and his Finance Minister Dr. Elmi Nur said the EU’s budgetary disbursement is a welcome and timely.
The Prime Minister said the money will be used in an efficient manner to achieve its intended purpose.

On his part, the Finance Minister aversed the disbursement will continue to embolden the critical reforms and policy priorities of the Somali government at this crucial moment.

The European Union announced that the union has approved a EUR 20.5 million budget support payment to the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS), under the EU’s Somalia State and Resilience Building Contract and Support to Debt Relief Action (SRBC).
In a press statement on Thursday in the capital Mogadishu, EU Ambassador to Somalia Tinna Intelman said Somalia will soon reach a historical milestone, which will bring new opportunities but also challenges.
She said that Increasing domestic resource mobilisation and further improving financial governance are absolutely critical to advance the economic reform agenda and further the state-building of Somalia.

The statement added that the budget support operation has assisted the Federal Republic of Somalia to ensure the delivery of core state functions, underpin macroeconomic stabilisation measures and, with the onset of Covid-19 and other concurrent crises, prevent a serious deterioration of the economic and social situation.
The European Union has been critical pillar to the Somali government in the fields of security, political and economy since the collapse of the central government.
