Mogadishu – Somalia Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble has announced on Sunday that the elections of Lower House MPs would begin next week.
Roble stated that the northern regions of Somaliland will be the first one to start electing their federal MPs, adding that Speaker Abdi Hashi and Deputy Prime Minister Mahdi Guleid have come to a consensus to expedite the election process.
“I want to bring in a new government and system as soon as possible and hand over power with my shirt clean and without violence. Parliamentary elections will begin next week as promised by Speaker Abdi Hashi and Deputy Prime Minister Mahdi Guleid and other officials in the Northern regions,” said Prime Minister Roble.
Deputy Prime Minister Mahdi Guleid pledged that the elections would be free and fair and urged regional State leaders to wind up their Upper House elections.
Somalia’s electoral process has been in stalemate with the current political standoff between President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo and Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble significantly affecting the exercise due to ideological differences that began when President issued a degree to state and government officials not to sign any deal with other. However, PM Roble met with Kenya president Uhuru Kenyatta at State House in Mombasa holding talks to strengthening the severed ties between the two countries.
The case of female intelligence officer who was abducted around the precints of the National intelligence Headquarters compounded the already complex situation with president appointing a commission of inquiry to probe into the matter while Roble laying his hopes on the military court.
