Garissa University has been closed indefinitely following an inferno that broke out in the institution this morning.
The university Senate in a meeting today ordered the all the students residing in the school to vacate the school premises by 4: 00PM this evening.
A memo seen by Frontier Online outlines that a preliminary assessment carried out by the University Senate this morning warranted the recommendation for a closure to allow investigation into the fire incident.
The institution further said that the date of the date of the resumption of the normal school calendar will be communicated to the students in due course.
The motive behind the inferno is yet to be established as probe into the incident commences.
The Garissa University was established as a constituent college of Moi University on 12th August, 2011 through Legal Notice No. 116, the Moi University Act (Cap. 210A), and the Garissa University College Order 2011.
The University become a fully pledged public University on 23rd October, 2017 and the first of its kind in the North-Eastern Region.
On 2nd April 2015, Garissa University College auffered one the worst deadly terror attacks.
Heavily armed attackers believed to be Al-Shabaab militants stormed the university campus and shot indescriminately on every one on sight..
Over 148 students lost their dear lives in this heinous act that resulted the closure of the school for a while.
Garissa University is the first and only university in Kenya’s northeastern province, an area that has been abandoned by the central government since independence.
