WAJIR COUNTY-Bernad Chelule, the man accused of killing Wajir county general surgeon Dr Zennaye Mekonnen on Tuesday morning appeared before Wajir law court where his charges were read to him.
Benard is facing three counts of charges; killing of the doctor,illegally driving a police motor vehicle and running away after the accidents.He denied two of the accusations.
Dr. Zenaye M. Zaleke who was only serving general surgeon in Wajir passed after he was knocked down by an overspeeding police vehicle near Grand Oasis hotel at around 8pm Sunday night.
The doctor who was by then said to have been crossing the road lost his life on the spot and his body was taken to wajir refferal hospital for preservation.
Wajir county governor Ahmed Ali Muktar sent condolences to the loved ones of the deceased and urged the police drivers to be watchful.
“I urge the road users, the public and especially the police vehicle drivers to limit their speed and be cautious when driving; it’s through reckless driving that we lost our longterm surgeon of Wajir County Referral Hospital” The governor wrote this on his official Facebook account.
Wajir county medical practitioners yesterday took to the streets to protest against the killing of the doctor and called on the relevant authorities to arrest the person behind the murder of their colleague..
Services at Wajir referral hospital were temporarily stopped on Monday after the doctors went on the streets to protest against the killing of their colleague calling for justice and action against the said police officer who killed the surgeon.
The case will be heard tomorrow before Wajir magistrate court.
