Garissa Governor Nathif Jama today announced engaging adroit measures to tackle the perennial drought that continued to increase the rate of poverty in Garissa county.
In his coherent and impassionate speech he delivered during opening of the Garissa 3rd Assembly, the Governor called for a paradigm shift in the drought management.
He said his administration will engage a sustainable economic plan that will address the impact of the drought that resulted a heavy economic losses in the county.
He mentioned the implementation of a major dry land farming activities in three different locations of Garissa county.
The three, Waso plains in Lagdera, Gababa in Ijara and Fafi plains in Fafi sub county was slated for a major irrigation schemes to boost food security in Garissa county.
According to the Governor, the projects will largely be undertaken on the basis of harvested rain water while also underground (borehole) waters may be resorted to where this is deemed economically possible.
He said each project will aim to resettle about 1000 drought affected families that were rendered vulnerable after losing their livestock to the vicious cycle of drought.
The Governor noted that the proposed Irrigation schemes will create abundance in provision of food and fodder for livestock.
He also mentioned provision of farm seedlings, Water pump engines, increased extension services and farm inputs to existing Irrigation farmers in the county.
The Governor promised enhanced veterinary services to livestock farmers and major reforms towards the traditional /pastoralist and subsistence sector into vibrant commercially oriented sector through a targeted value chain.
The Governor further promised completion and operationalization of the Garissa Export slaughter house for processing of livestock meat and meat products.
In the water sector, he promised to complete ongoing water projects, construction of mega dam in Holugho and Madogashe, extension of water supplies in Ijara town and Danyere.
He also announced major plans set to address water shortages in Garissa municipality and more rural areas in the county.
