MOGADISHU– A special Unit of Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency ( NISA) have on Wednesday nabbed several suspected Al-Shabab members in a sting security operation conducted at farmlands and villages in Lower Shabelle.
The officers also extended the operation to parts of Middle Shabelle region in Southern Somalia.
Different components of the Somali government forces backed by international partners have in recent days beefed up security operations against areas occupied by the Al-Shabab militant group which have resulted in the mass killing of the militants, destruction of their sham courts and apprehension of scores of them in different parts of the country.
Elite forces of Danab and Dervishes from Jubbaland regional State on Tuesday neutralised several members of the militants group 42 kilometers west of Jilib town that serves as the cradle of the Al-qaeda affiliate group in the Horn of Africa.
Top commanders of the security agencies have signalled the commencement of second phase of uprising and offensive against the insurgents in the coming days.
The first phase of the onslaught saw several strategic towns and villages wrestled from the grip of Al-Shabab- a group that has been waging deadly insurgency in Somalia for decades targeting key government installations, top senior government and security officials.
