MOGADISHU-Somalia president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo has congratulated Puntland for successfully conducting a popular vote elections.
Farmaajo spoke on phone with the leaders of the various Puntland Political movements that were contesting in the polls and applauded the contestants, voters and the Electoral Commission.
The President termed the Local Government polls a democratic milestone and a great boost for Somalia’s political process.

His congratulatory message comes after Puntland regional State leader Said Abdullahi Deni accuses Farmajo of not sending his best wishes and congratulatory message upon the completion of the one person one vote electoral process.
The UN In Somalia commended the Transitional Puntland Electoral Commission (TPEC), the government and the people of Puntland for their commitment to holding direct elections, as enshrined in Puntland’s Constitution.
The United Nations in Somalia believes that the successful completion of ‘one person, one vote’ elections in Qardho, Eyl and Ufeyn would be an important step in showing the feasibility of universal suffrage elections at local, state and national levels across the country.”
Puntland conducted the local elections in the districts of Qardho, Ufeyn and Eyl. It was the first time in Somalia -outside the self- declared autonomous and breakaway region of Somaliland that residents were able to elect their representatives directly since decades ago.A total of 449 candidates will be contested for 87 local council seats
Swedish embassy in Somalia largely facilitated the elections of the regional State and its observers were stationed in various electoral centres in a bid to oversee the exercise which was the first of its kind in over 50 years.
