Nairobi, Kenya – A police officer attached to Kabete police station in Nairobi Kenya has shot dead 6 people including his wife in what officials described as “Shooting spree” before turning the gun on himself using his service gun AK- 47.
“We are told that the couple had issues and were quarrelling before,” Dageroti sub- county police commander Francis Wahome told AFP.
“Until now, we never had any concerns about the officer’s behaviour. He had been going for duty properly, and had never been involved in an incident like this,” Mr Wahome told the Reuters news agency.
According to eyewitnesses who spoke to Reuters, the police man who was later identified by authorities as Constable Benson Imbasi is said to have cocked his gun and started firing frenziedly at members of public who came out after hearing loud bangs from his home.
The motive behind the killings has not been immediately established but Kenya’s directorate of criminal investigations ( DCI) said the matter is being investigated.
This is not the first time a Kenya police officer went on rampage and started opening fire, In June this year a female fugitive police officer Caroline Kangogo disappered after killing a male colleague in Nakuru and a businessman in Juja.
The killer cop was later found dead at her parent’s home in Elkeyo Marakwet and left behind an alleged suicide note saying her failed marriage and her husband’s alleged infidelity made her become heartless.
She was also reported to have apologised to the family of constable John Ogweno who she is alleged to have shot dead in Nakuru before allegedly killing Peter Ndwiga in Juja.
Protest erupted in Kabete after the shooting incident as angry members of the public blocked roads to demonstrate against the killing.
Kenya’s interior minister Fred Matiang’ I while attending an event to commemorate fallen police officers and prison warders in line of duties called on the members of the public to remain calm and attributed the kiliings to mental distress.
